The historical Wenceslas was a Christian prince and martyr born in Bohemia in about 907. The words of the popular carol were written by John M. Neale (1818-1866) and first appeared in Carols for Christmastide in 1853. The tune (Tempus Adest Floridum) is a thirteenth century Swedish carol first published in Sweden in 1582.
