Description

Shipton under Wychwood Church, Oxfordshire.

During the reign of Henry I (1100-1135) the church at Shipton was given as a prebend (income) with which to maintain a canon at Salisbury Cathedral. Here an initial ‘S’, for Shipton and Salisbury, encircles the church tower. All the featured decorations are taken from the many ornamental motifs in the church. The Shipton prebendal stall can still be seen in Salisbury Cathedral.
