Description
A king was marching his army over the Oxfordshire hills when his way was obstructed by a witch. She challenged him to take seven strides to the crest of the hill and if he could see the village of Long Compton down below then he would be King of England.
The king agreed to the challenge but having taken his seven strides found the view of Long Compton blocked. The old witch then cursed him and his men “As Long Compton thou canst not see, King of England though shalt not be. Rise up stick and stand still stone, For King of England thou shalt be none. Thou and thy men hoar stones shall be and I myself an elder tree”. Whereupon the king, his soldiers and knights were all petrified and turned into the stones we see circling the site today.
